ER309/309L contains about 23–25% chromium, 12–14% nickel, and ≤0.03% carbon. The balanced chromium and nickel give excellent oxidation resistance and durability. Mechanical properties include tensile strength of 80,000–85,000 psi, yield strength of 55,000–60,000 psi, and elongation of 30–35%. The low carbon grade enhances resistance to sensitization, reducing the risk of carbide precipitation. ER309/309L weld deposits are tough and crack-resistant, making them good for dissimilar welding applications. Both MIG and TIG processes benefit from its stable arc performance and smooth bead formation.
