Stainless Steel 440B is a martensitic stainless steel with high carbon content, normally containing around 0.9% carbon and 16–18% chromium. Due to this composition, it develops high hardness following suitable heat treatment, thus being useful in cutting tools and stress-containing applications. It has very good wear resistance and average corrosion resistance—better than type 440A but slightly less than 440C. Mechanically, it offers excellent tensile strength and good edge retention with hardness levels going up to HRC 58. While less ductile than austenitic grades, 440B is effective in applications where strength and abrasion resistance are important.
